The Charles Albert Scholarship rewards $3,000 to an incoming male freshman at Northern Illinois University.
Charles Albert was born on February 14, 1987, in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Shortly after being born Charles moved to the east coast where he lived in New Jersey for 10 years. Returning to Glen Ellyn in 6th grade, Charles attended Glenbard West High School and graduated in 2005.
Charles’ experience at Northern Illinois University was anything but ordinary. Charles came to NIU expecting to get an education, meet some good friends, and have fun. What he left with was so much more. In the first semester of Charles’ freshman year on campus, he was elected president of the NIU Colony of Phi Kappa Psi. Charles served as the president for two terms, stepping down just after the chapter was approved to become the “Illinois Iota” Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi. On April 21, 2007, Charles was initiated badge number one out of the 25 founding fathers of Illinois Iota, but his role as a leader was far from over. Charles went on to serve as the District III Archon of Phi Kappa Psi, one of six undergraduate members elected to serve on Phi Kappa Psi’s national executive council. Charles also served NIU’s Greek community in several capacities. As Vice President of Recruitment for NIU’s Interfraternity Council (IFC), Charles revamped NIU’s recruitment process to give IFC the highest new member numbers in over 15 years. Charles was later appointed as the Director of Greek Affairs for NIU’s Student Association, NIU’s student government.
Charles left his mark on Northern Illinois University. We have created the Charles Albert Scholarship to honor Charles’ accomplishments in his short time at NIU. It is our intention to award this to an incoming NIU student who shows the potential to excel in the numerous leadership opportunities offered at Northern Illinois University.
